IS SWIMMING GOOD FOR ME?

Swimming is a great hobby and exercise. It helps to relax and stretch the body. Many of my patients ask if they should do swimming as an aerobic exercise or just to tone their muscles. The answer is yes! However, swimming can be dangerous too.

Swimming is a full body exercise. It means all the parts of the body are in motion when we swim. They are all connected to each other. If one of the connections is weak or malfunctioning, the whole chain is broken. For example, if we do not have enough mobility in the shoulder, the torso and the forearm will be overworking to compensate the shoulder .

This is the reason why people sometimes feel joint and muscle pain for several days after swimming.

Therefore, swimming itself cannot treat or balance the body. Swimming is not a substitution for stretching or weight lifting.

If you have soreness or pain after swimming please see a therapist.

( Massage therapist, physiotherapist, a chiropractor, or a Traditional Chinese Medicine)
